It all started with an idea for a product that would make owning a dog easier. A hands-free convenient way to clean up after them.
During the spring of 2007, my young son Connor and I started working on, what we now call, the Pooch Power Shovel. Our journey to share this pet pooper scooper with dog lovers everywhere has been, to say the least, very rewarding and challenging. Bringing our dream to life would not have been possible without faith in each other, our family and our community.
Once we had a working prototype and applied for our patents, we began our entrepreneurial adventure. We met with prospective investors, product design firms, even big box retailers. All of whom suggested the product be made overseas – in order to save money. In each of these instances my response was the same: “The Pooch Power Shovel will be built in America for the love of dogs.” Our entire philosophy from the moment our idea was conceived, was to involve our neighbors and give back to the community. This unwavering commitment quickly became the foundation for our tag line.
At this point in our adventure it was late 2008 and the economy was starting to slow. In order to bring our product to market with our values in tact, we would need to invest every last penny. Fortunately, fate introduced us to three very talented and recently displaced professionals. These members of our community had significant product design, product testing and product manufacturing backgrounds. Working from our homes, we used the Internet both to communicate and develop our product in a virtual “think tank”. We met on occasion to physically share our prototype designs and collaborate on new ideas and enhancements.
Next, we sourced a local graphic design firm that assigned a woman to our project. Turns out her love for dogs began at the tender age of two. Her passion is evident in her work and can be seen here at www.PetPowerProducts.com.
“The Pooch Power Shovel is built in America for the love of dogs!”
PS — If you think the Pooch Power Shovel is cool, wait until you see what Taylor (Connor’s little sister) and I have been working on!
